- Material and care
Proper usage and maintenance
Proper usage and maintenance is vital for getting the most out of the valuable resources we have. Our designs are made to last for generations, but just like everything else, they need a little care to get there.
Powder coated steel
Steel is a strong, timeless and malleable material – enabling designs with thin profiles and various patterns and shapes. The steel has received a decorative powder coating – a high-quality and dry finishing process that gives a stronger and more streamlined surface than conventional liquid paintings.
Use soapy water and a soft brush. Wipe off with a dry cloth. Note: Do not use abrasive pads or abrasive cleaning agents as this may harm the surface.
Although sturdy and resistant, powder coated steel is not invincible, be careful not to make scratches in the surface as it will make the material vulnerable to corrosion.
About the designer / John Astbury
As a former anthropologist, boat builder and active musician John Astbury is a designer with a highly unusual and interesting background. The three different careers provide him with unique insight that he draws on as a designer. He is fascinated with archetypes and origins and aims to create new relationships with the familiar while retaining a high degree of simplicity. He always seeks to provide conditions for design to produce the unexpected and describes his work as a process of uncovering narratives and symbols within the object and make them visible.
Also not just talking but doing is essential to Astbury: using his hands, while working the material, seeing the form emerging. The duality in switching back and forth between words and hands is where Astburys ideas and work take shape. John Astbury is English but lives in Sweden, where he established his studio in 2011 after graduating from industrial design at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Konstfack.
