The Town House
Fantastic daylight that comes in from south and north, a garden full of small, green oases, cosy terraces for playing and spending time together, and a greenhouse on the roof with a view of the Sound. This is the home of the Willehader Birk family, who have settled down in a beautiful, modern town house in Malmö’s sustainable city precinct of Västra Hamnen. Close to the sea and yet part of the city. The perfect setting for a family of five that loves the social life between adults and children that run in and out of the houses, with the street, the gardens and the harbour as everyone’s playground, or their extended living room.
This is where the sun rises and sets. Which can be followed round the many levels and open spaces of the house that allow the light to pass and seem to let the garden inside the house. With a natural warmth and security in materials, lovely furniture to sink into, lots of light and space that blend together. A functional base where everyone can find a personal space for play, relaxation and work. Here is room for everyone and everyone’s tasks, whether they are carried out at the long dining table, or separately. Perhaps there’s time for a game of cards, or a chat while stroking Miso the cat. Perhaps for doing nothing while waiting for a meal, enjoying a cup of coffee in a cosy corner, reading a book in a favourite chair or just letting one’s thoughts drift along.
